Health Insurance

There are millions of Americans without health insurance and there are millions of us who do have health insurance. Are the once who have insurance better of?  Daily you can find new articles in newspapers, on-line or even in the morning/evening news how Americans who do have insurance get their desperately needed treatments to maintain their health status denied by their health insurance carrier.

Here are just two examples that have made recent headlines:

On April 25, 2008 Good Morning America did a section on Susan Kristoff from West Palm Beach. Susan was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Her insurance denied her the long-term disability benefits she desperately needed. There was only a change to her benefit status after Susan's insurance was contacted by ABC news. That particular insurance carrier approved the benefits since they did not want to get the bad publicity. Well they got it anyway.

We all have heard of Nataline Sarkisyan (17) who was in need for a liver transplant. Again her insurance carrier denied the operation. The media got involved again and after some back and forth the liver transplant was approved. We all know, it was to late. Nataline had died waiting for the approval from her insurance carrier.  Many of us are fortunate enough for having health insurance coverage BUT it is up to you to keep yourself informed on what your benefits really are, stay informed when your employer re-negotiates your benefit plan.

Health Insurance is a business.
